Meeting Report: June 2015 Feedback and Distortion in Audio Amplifiers

On Wednesday June 3rd twenty-four AES members and visitors gathered at the SAE Institute Lecture Theatre in South Melbourne to hear renowned designer Ed Cherry present a talk on

“Feedback and Distortion in Audio Amplifiers”

Ed started his presentation by outlining the early years at Bell Labs, where Ed later worked, where the impetus to reducing distortion (particularly of the intermod variety) was to improve the audio-channel carrying capacity of their existing copper wire network (which comprised 50% of their capital assets) by multiplexing signals without the limitations of interference from intermodulation products.

Meeting Report: April 2015 Digital Audio Networking with Dante

On Monday 20th April, 26 AES members and visitors gathered at the SAE Institute Lecture Theatre to hear Audinate founder and Chief Technology Officer Aidan Williams speak to us on the subject of

Digital Audio Networking with Dante.

He explained that the company Audinate is a technology startup spun off from National ICT Australia (NICTA) to commercialize a project which grew into the Dante audio networking solution.
He indicated that the company has offices in Sydney, Portland (USA), and Brighton (UK), with further expansion imminent.

He started his presentation with a comprehensive primer in “Networking 101 for Audio Professionals”

Meeting Report: Feb 2015 Dolby Atmos at Soundfirm

On Monday 9th February 32 AES members and guests visited the iconic Soundfirm audio post-production facility for a tour and explanation of the Dolby Atmos immersive audio system.

We were hosted by Sound Supervisor Chris Goodes, who firstly provided a short tour of the various mix rooms and mixing theatres which make up the facility.

Following the tour, we all reassembled in the main mixing theatre, Theatre 1 where Chris provided a very interesting presentation on cinema sound generally, and Dolby Atmos specifically.

Meeting Report: November 2014 From Continuous to Discrete and back again

On Monday 24h November Melbourne Section Chairman, Mark Edwards presented a talk entitled “From Continuous to Discrete… and back again…” at the Lecture Theatre of The SAE Institute in South Melbourne.

The topic covered the process of analogue-digital-analogue conversion in a largely non-mathematical manner. Mark provided insight into the practical implementation of A/Ds and DACs and the importance of Nyquist filtering.
