We have scheduled our first meeting for 2026 in February, as usual.
We plan to examine the AES67 Standard, which defines the transport of audio over IP networks. The AES70 standard for control, monitoring, and connection management over media networks will also be examined.
Further details will be posted closer to the date.
Another momentous year for the AES Melbourne Section draws to a close.
It is a time for us all to slow down, enjoy life, and reconnect with people we don’t see often enough.
To that end, the AES Melbourne Section is holding an End of Year Dinner at Club Ringwood on Monday 8th December at 7:30pm
Those who attended last year’s dinner will remember the venue and the event fondly. I discovered that it is surprising what can be learned from audio practitioners in very different fields from your own in a social setting.

Tomlinson Holman presented to our Section in the face of significant upheaval caused by an upset to his travel plans. In San Francisco, unable to fly home due to fog, he presented from a hotel room there (“always have a backup plan”).

After a brief introduction from Section Chair Graeme Huon, Tomlinson commenced his presentation, which he had titled “The History and Future of Surround Sound: A Story of Death and Resurrection in Six Acts”. He started by playing a recording of “The Flight of the Bumblebee” as an Overture, commenting that this tune was selected for a reason – a choice that will be explained later – stay tuned.
On Monday, 27th October, the world’s leading expert on the topic, Tomlinson Holman takes you on a journey through the evolution of surround sound from its earliest acoustic invention by composers, through the first surround sound recording and who invented it, into cinemas and its development ever since.
