Meeting Notice: October 2024 – Maton Guitars Site Visit – The Art of the Luthier

The October meeting of the AES Melbourne Section will be an in-person facility tour and presentation held on Tuesday 1st October 2024 at 7:30pm (Yes it’s a *TUESDAY* night)

The meeting will be a site visit to world-leading Guitar manufacturer Maton in Box Hill, Melbourne, Australia.

Tour numbers are limited, so you will need to book at https://www.trybooking.com/CVHBP

Priority will be given to AES members, but non-members are welcome to book and will be allocated any spare spots.


Patrick Evans, Maton’s Manager, Product Design, Development and Speciality Projects will conduct a tour of their manufacturing facility and speak to us on:

Meeting Report: 12 August 2024 – Alec Graham on AVIXA Audio Standards

On Monday 12th August, the Section held its AGM via Zoom (full details at https://aesmelbourne.org.au/2024-agm/) after which Audio Visual Consultant Alec Graham presented on the topic of:

AVIXA Audio Standards.

After a brief introduction by Section Chairman Graeme Huon of Alec and the trade association AVIXA Huon, Alec started with a brief rundown of his career, up to his current situation where he is an AV Consultant with Aurecon.

He then outlined his involvement with AVIXA right from his early days in the AV industry, involving certification exam preparation work, standards group work and serving as a conference speaker.

Meeting Report: 17 June 2024 – Anton Hasell on Bell Design

On Monday 17th June, members and friends of the Melbourne Section of the AES gathered at the Wellington St campus of Collarts to hear bell designer Dr Anton Hasell present on the topic of:

The event was also live-streamed on our YouTube channel for those unable to attend.

Section Chairman Graeme Huon introduced Anton, outlining his history and background in sculpting bells for a range of public installations.

Anton started with a description of his development of the single-pitch “harmonic” bell, a feat that had never been achieved before.

Meeting Report: August 2023 – Ben Osmo on Film Location Sound Mixing

On Monday 14th August, the Melbourne Section of the AES held our Annual General Meeting followed by our regular bi-monthly meeting.

Following the AGM, Academy Award winner Ben Osmo (Best Achievement in Sound Mixing 2015 – Mad Max: Fury Road) presented on the topic of:

Film Production Sound Through the Years
             changes and added responsibilities.

Newly re-elected Chairman Graeme Huon introduced Ben with a brief outline of Ben’s career.

Ben then took us through his career in location sound production from his start in 1975 at the ABC. He told us that the typical setup of the time was a Nagra portable battery-operated tape recorder and a shotgun microphone on a long boom pole. He explained that the shoots were often one-camera affairs with shots framed as wide-shot, mid-shot, and close-up with the microphone positioned accordingly to achieve the appropriate sound balance.
