Meeting Report: October 2022 – Angus Davidson on Immersive Music

On Monday 3rd October, the Melbourne Section of the AES held our regular bi-monthly meeting.

We welcomed about 30 members and guests via Zoom.

Angus Davidson from Red Road Immersive studio presented to us on the topic

Recording Music for Immersive Platforms 
– applying Dolby Atmos to music streaming

Chairman Graeme Huon introduced Angus who started his presentation with a brief run-through of his career to date.

He then moved on to introduce the studio design decisions necessary for Dolby Atmos mixing, covering the appropriate room size for different applications (music, video, or film work) as well as the acoustic treatment, and choices of working with a physical console or mixing “in-the-box”.
He then spoke about equipment choices, emphasising the criticality of speaker choice.

Dolby Atmos has transitioned from its recognised role in film sound, to a new and significantly different role as a dedicated platform for streaming music playback, on platforms like Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon +.

Meeting Report: June 2022 – DaS AuReality demonstration

On Monday 20th June the AES Melbourne Section finally returned to our old meeting haunt of the SAE Institute lecture theatre, where we welcomed Vastigo’s Joe Hayes to demonstrate his DaS (Diffusion at Source) AuReality loudspeakers.

In October last year, Joe introduced us to his concept of the DaS loudspeaker algorithm which provides a listening experience unshackled from the room’s acoustics and free of sweet-spot limitations. A full report on that presentation can be found at https://www.aesmelbourne.org.au/mtg-rpt-oct2021/

This time around, Joe gave us the opportunity to hear the results of his work.
