Performance Of Centenarian Audio Legend’s First Symphony Happens This Sunday

On Sunday 19th May 2024, the Surrey Hills Orchestra of Melbourne under the baton of Mary Louise-Wright airs the inaugural performance of Monty Maizels’ first symphony, described by the composer as his ‘Seem Funny’.

The venue is the James Tatoulis Auditorium at MLC, Barkers Rd. Kew from 2:30pm.
Tickets are available at the door, or you can book at

This is a unique event for Melbourne as Monty will be 101 years old this year, yet remains active including with both composition and with electronic scoring and render of his works.

Monty Maizels was born in London in 1923 and emigrated to Australia in July 1939. He first worked at 4BC Brisbane as a radio console operator, then moved to Broadcast Exchange of Australia (BEA) in Melbourne where his talent for innovative composition (Words and Music) was recognised by his ad agency clients and sought for many radio campaigns. He went on to produce, cast and direct over 2,500 radio episodes of drama and documentary.
Since joining Actors Equity in 1985, Monty has re-awakened his own dormant histrionic talents, with cameo parts in local TV/film productions including the movie ‘The Castle’, as neighbour Jack.

For recreation, Monty is an enthusiastic supporter of U3A and also a member of Apple Users Society of Melbourne – AUSOM. Today, Monty uses computers extensively for composing and rendering symphonic and other musical works – an amazing achievement given that Monty fully predates electronics! Yet, strangely, as he takes aim at the elusive target of his 102nd year, this “Seem Funny” is his first work ever to be performed live.

The Four movements are:
I.   Adagio / Allegro–Tempo nogro mosso.

II.  Intermezzo Internetto.

III. Menuetto e Trix (Twin).  (‘Modelled’ on Rails in the Garden – an MM film score)

IV. Rondo: Trovare Facilimente. (Source: TV jingle for Easyfind calendars.)

Monty will soon join our AES Melbourne ‘Legends in Audio’ series.

An interview with Monty for 3AW’s ‘Remember When: (Simon Owens and Philip Brady) was aired 21st April 2024
