The short AGM will be followed by a presentation by David J Murphy of Krix Loudspeakers on the subject:
Design Techniques for Loudspeaker Systems
The presentation is a summary of the process used to develop a commercially successful range of loudspeaker systems for cinema screen applications. The choice of crossover frequencies is determined by factors such as matching the directivity of the individual components, the power rating of components, and selecting for low distortion. Examples of typical performance characteristics are given. The principles are broadly applicable to all loudspeaker design.
A range of 2-way, 3-way, and 4-way loudspeaker systems for behind the screen has been designed and developed inAustralia. High quality stereo recordings have been used to fine tune their sound quality on voice, and selected movies used to confirm that quality in 5.1 format. The mid, high, and ultra-high frequency horn loaded components have been specially designed to match beam angles with low frequency enclosures at the usual crossover frequencies, and with each other in 3-way and 4-way systems. This ensures a very smooth and consistent Directivity Index (DI) through the audio spectrum. A flexible suite of active and passive crossovers has been developed.
